REVISED: Summer Students Selected

Monday, July 7, 2014

NOTICE FROM CHIEF & COUNCIL

It was brought to our attention that some students who were selected for summer employment did not meet all of the eligibility requirements. Please be advised that we have reviewed and verified the applications and as a result some students have been replaced.

We apologize for this oversight and any inconvenience this has caused. We will work to ensure all future applications are screened accordingly based on the eligibility requirements as outlined.

Congratulations to all the successful students and may everyone have a great summer.

Sincerely,

CHIEF & COUNCIL
SANDY LAKE FIRST NATION

Summer Student Employment Program

Sandy Lake First Nation administers a Summer Student Employment Program. The program receives funds through Federal, Provincial and other funding agencies.

This year a total of 68 applications were received to fill 40 available positions. Chief & Council selects the summer student candidates using a voting system.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be considered for summer student employment, applicants must:

1. Be a registered Sandy Lake First Nation band member
Applicants are required to provide their band numbers. Chief & Council give priority to students registered to Sandy Lake First Nation due to the limited number of summer student positions available.

2. Have completed school in the 2013-2014 academic school year
Applicants are required to provide a copy of their transcript or a letter verifying school completion.

3. Be enrolled in the 2014-2015 academic school year
Applicants are required to provide a letter of confirmation from NNEC or their respective educational institution verifying enrolment.

4. Have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
This is a legal requirement for employment under the Labour Code of Canada.

The Selection Process

There are 40 summer student positions available. These are distributed evenly into the five different geographical areas of the community so that each area receives 8 summer students. Should an area have less than 8 applicants, any vacant positions will be re-allocated to the areas with the largest number of applicants.

Each Council member writes their 8 choices on a piece of paper and submits. Votes are tallied and an applicant must have 51% of the vote to be successful. This is continued until all positions are filled.

Every Council member gets a turn reading aloud the voting results with another Council member verifying. Administrative support staff is also present to provide Council with applicant information and assist in the voting process.
